Welcome to our blog. We’re two Kiwis spending the summer of 2019 exploring Canada by car. Stick around to read more about our adventure!

He Says: Back in Canada By-the-Sea

St. Andrews By-the-Sea is a typical sleepy resort town that sits close to the border of of Maine (USA) and New Brunswick (Canada). After a couple weeks in New York and New England we were ready to head back to the land of the maple and carry on with our travels.

Crossing the border back into Canada also marked the first time we have driven across a time zone, as we entered the Atlantic time zone and pushed our clocks forward an hour.

We arrived in May which is still very much early spring for this part of the world, but it was easy to see that this place would be a mad house in the peak of summer! The closest New Zealand town I would liken it to is Whangamata, with beautiful beaches and cute shops and restaurants on the main strip.

The Algonquin resort is a classic old school hotel that is the centrepiece of the town. Built in the late 19th century to promote tourism in the area, the hotel is now run by the luxury Fairmont brand, and rooms can go for more than $400 a night in the height of summer. Needless to say we chose to stay in an AirBnB and just take some pictures from the outside!

We managed to get 3 seasons in the the 2 days we were in St Andrews, with the fog and misty rain making for some stunning views from our walk along the ocean.

In the afternoon I played the Algonquin Golf Course, built to provide entertainment for the guests of the hotel. The course was freshly renovated in 2017 to take more advantage of the ocean views, and many of the changes were still sinking in when I played.

As I came through the 9th hole and headed out to the back 9 along the coast, the thick fog returned making navigation of the remaining holes a challenge! Contrast my picture of the famous 12th hole to the promotional pic from the course website!

Our brief stay in St. Andrews was a nice return back to Canada, and we packed up our car (we are getting it down to a fine art now) on continued further up the coast for our first foray into a Canadian national park.
